powers and skills

Every new character begins with 525 Spendable EXP, which acts as a starter pack for purchasing powers and skills. “Powers” are the supernatural abilities that a character can possess, while “Skills” are the abilities that a character has with or without a Power. When connected to a Power, Skills are referred to as “Functions”.

When purchasing a Power or Skill, you must first purchase the Level 1 slot, then then each subsequent level. So, for example, if you were using your 525 EXP Starter Pack to make a Laputan with a Tier 2 Power, the cost would include the cost of a Tier 1 Power (150 EXP) + Tier 2 Power (250 EXP) for a total of 400 EXP.


Every Character can only have 1 Power, but this Power can develop and change over time, through the Skills that support it. A Power should be thematically similar to what it began as. Human Powers MUST START at Level 1, Laputan Powers can start at Level 1 or Level 2 (unless said Laputan is under 18, then they also must start at Level 1). If you have leftovers from your Starter Pack (everyone will), up to 100 EXP can go towards your next Power Growth.


Skills are separated into hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills are those that would give your character a competitive edge in battle, such as Speed, Strength or Durability. Soft skills are everything else– be they hobbies, professional abilities, or something entirely different.

Skills are as strong as a Tertiary Function, to start. Tertiary Functions (and other Functions) are discussed in the next section.


Every Power has Three functions. Primary Functions are the strongest aspect of a Power. Secondary Functions are about ½ as strong, whereas Tertiary Functions are about ⅓ as strong. Skills are as effective as Tertiary Functions. (I personally don’t care about having hard numbers listed in apps, but if you reeeally want the numbers, here are the equations to figure numbers out, using Level 2 Strength as an example. “Function” is represented by “F”

Secondary F = ½ (Primary F - Primary F of Lower Tier) + Primary F of Lower Tier
I.e. = ½(1500-750)+750 = ½(750)+750 = 375 +750 = 1125 lbs.

Tertiary F = ⅓ (Primary F - Primary F of Lower Tier) + Primary F of Lower Tier
I.e. ⅓(1500-750)+750 = ⅓(750)+750 = 250 + 750 = 1000 lbs.

If it's not a numerically-based skill (i.e. damage/durability or healing), the general rule of thumb is "can achieve _ within 2 posts" for Secondary Functions or "can achieve _ within 3 posts" for Tertiary Funcitons.

If you wish to revise or completely change a power, you can pay to do so. To completely change a character’s power costs 50% of the current Power Level cost. To make a slight adjustment to the Power costs 25% of the current Power Level cost. To illustrate–let’s say you start with a fire-breathing dragon with a Level 3 Power. You still want him to be a dragon, but you want him to be an ice-breathing dragon– this is only a slight adjustment to the Power, because it’s still a dragon, just of a different element. This costs you 25% of 500 EXP (the cost of a Level 3 Power), or 125 EXP. BUT if you want to take your fire-breathing dragon and turn them into an ice-golem, there’s really no facet of the old character left in-tact, power-wise. This costs you 50% of 500 EXP, or 250 EXP. Adjustments to Functions cost nothing, unless changing the Function changes the theme or overarching idea of a power.
