FACECLAIM: [noubbc]KEKKAI SENSEN - Klaus von Reinherz - @toby[/noubbc]
Toby is a big, quiet guy. He speaks very sparingly, and moves silently-- a rather unnerving skill for someone of his stature. He is hyper-aware of his surroundings, perhaps even a touch paranoid-- you can see it in how his eyes are constantly evaluating an area and the people in it, how he never leaves his open back facing a room, and other such antics. Toby would chalk it up to years of not only working for the police force, but having a mother who did as well. That sort of cautiousness never leaves you. When a person speaks to him, he'll look directly at them, unflinchingly-- perhaps a little more than most would consider comfortable. But it leaves no room for doubt about the fact that he's listening, closely.
[div align="center"][div style="font-family:georgia;font-size:8pt;color:#cecece;letter-spacing:-1px;border:#dddddd solid 1px;padding:2px;text-transform:uppercase;width:90px;"]under the surface[/div][/div]
PERSONALITY: Before the incident, Toby was a drawn and quiet man who, despite his few words, was clearly a man of good moral caliber. He had a strong sense of justice and fairness, treating everyone with respect until they did something to lose it. In his mind, all people deserve a base level of respect-- even criminals. They're just people who made bad decisions and got caught. And Toby's been around enough people to know how to talk to them, to lead a conversation where he wanted it to go. He just preferred to keep to himself, looking forward to returning home at the end of the day and curling up with a good book, sipping tea, and lavishing attention upon his two cats, Gertrude and Alice. Being so routinely public-contact, it would be easy to understand his reluctance to socialize outside of work.
Since the incident, however... Toby's love of solitude has begun to falter. Six months at-sea (or rather, under it) could cure anyone of such fancies. It damaged him psychologically, rendering him petrified of open water (a fun dilemma for someone who lives in a coastal area) and prone to panic attacks and night-terrors alike. Anyone who knew Toby in adolescence would avow that he's always been a little Type A, with how focused on his studies and over-committed to his extracurriculars he was-- but this is an entirely new level. The things he saw and experienced there sometimes escape explanation altogether.
Toby used to be so levelheaded, and so well-read-- very intelligent, when it came to books and people, and as cool as a cucumber regardless of the situations that confronted him. But the post-traumatic shock has left him... distracted. Somewhat unconvinced that any of this is real. He left a world that strictly human, and returned to one full of all sorts of non-human people. So he'll need to recuperate some before returning to his work as a detective.

HISTORY: Toby's early life was rather lackluster-- comfortable, even. He was born in Fair Oaks, California to Makoto and Keirith Murakami. His father worked for the state, while his mother was a police officer, working opposing schedules so that someone was always home for their only son, and the two of them owned a lovely house together. They doted on Toby, and wanted to afford him the best possible upbringing, so he was enrolled in only the best schools, and took a part in numerous extracurriculars-- piano, seasonal sports, karate. It was a very regimented life, and while Toby was never expected to be "the best", it was expected that he attend regularly, to show his commitment.
Toby was quite the dedicated student and child, unproblematic and excellent in his studies. His true love was reading, however. His parents could never seem to get his nose out of the library books that he so loved. He preferred sci-fi and fantasy, comic books of all sorts, new and old. Toby's introversion meant that he missed-out on many of the hallmarks of adolescence-- dating, dances, sporting events, concerts-- but he didn't really miss them. His life felt plenty enriched by the diversions he had chosen.
Like his mother, Tobias went into law enforcement after high school. He began as an officer, but a few years in decided he wanted something a little... different... and enrolled at one of the local universities, to pursue a degree in forensic science. He took a position as a detective shortly after earning his degree.
Three years ago, Toby left his childhood town for San Francisco, pursuing a more generous pay and perhaps a little adventure as a detective with the San Francisco Police Department. He was in the thick of criminal investigations, particularly dealings with gangs, including one Cryptid Motorcycle Club. In the year preceding the Crash, there were plenty of otherworldly happenings Toby heard of-- for when things when sideways, the police were often the first to be notified and sent. But, being a pragmatic man, Toby chalked such happenings up to drugs or other such substances. If anything strange happened around him, it was most certainly written-off in a similar fashion.
His dangerous dealings caught-up with him, on October 29th, 2048. After Toby had already gone to bed for the night, masked men broke into his house in the Oakland Hills, beating him unconscious before dragging him out to an awaiting vehicle and driving away.
Toby came-to on a boat, surrounded by masked captors and bound in bike chains to a number of weights, adrift somewhere in the ocean. The men interrogated him, demanding to know his contacts, and what he knew. They beat him, threatened him, beat him again-- pulled some fingernails, attempted to pull some teeth-- but Toby refused to speak. For his stubbornness, he was shot and cast overboard, the weights that bound him pulling him down into the depths. Toby struggled, attempting to free himself, but with his bleeding wounds and rapid descent into the sea, surviving was impossible. He died that night, the day before the Crash.
By all means, he should have stayed dead. But he was found immediately after the Crash began. An immense creature with a head like a bison and multiple lamp-like eyes, and a multi-winged, tentacled, but otherwise incomprehensible body. With glowing claws the size of small sedans, it delicately pried Toby from his chains. And, when one glowing claw grazed his chest, Toby awoke, every fiber of his body burning. Gold pooled in old wounds and filled his lungs, pushing sea-water out. Flesh turned obsidian. The transformation began in his chest, radiating out to the tips of his fingers and toes, to the crown of his head. And as the gold overtook his eyes and the pain subsided, he looked upon a world painted in sepia, and upon his otherworldly savior.

Having offered its advice, the creature released Toby from its grasp and swam on, leaving him truly alone. Toby willed himself to wake-up, for something as extraordinary as this could only be a dream. He lay in the sand and looked skyward, waiting for sleep to overcome him, waiting for reality to return. No such thing happened.
So, Toby walked-- hours to days, days to weeks, weeks to months-- his mind drifted in and out of focus, sometimes fading altogether. Which direction was home? Was there even a home to return to, or was he somewhere else altogether? He didn't sleep, didn't eat, just marched heedless of the tides around him.
A few weeks ago, he began to see light filtering through the water up above. Toby was drawing nearer to the surface.
[div align="center"][div style="font-family:georgia;font-size:8pt;color:#cecece;letter-spacing:-1px;border:#dddddd solid 1px;padding:2px;text-transform:uppercase;width:90px;"]power[/div][/div]
[tbody]
NAME: "Kintsugi Save-Point" OR "Heart of Gold"TYPE: ChangelingLEVEL: 1
[/tbody]
DESCRIPTIONS: Toby possesses a reactive adaptation-- which is a fancy way of saying that, when his body is subjected to certain external stimuli, it transforms in order to protect his well-being. Specifically, any sort of physical trauma (injury or threat of injury, peak in cortisol or adrenaline, and the likes) will cause the gold in his veins to solidify, and prompt his skin to start turning obsidian, rendering him a living statue. This form can still move, much like a living person, but it feels like metal and stone to the touch. By becoming a living statue, Toby protects himself from potential injury, since stone and metal cannot bleed. His power deactivates as soon as the threat (real or imagined) is no longer present, and his adrenaline and cortisol levels return to their normal levels. Even when his power is inactive, gold veins weave like rivers all over his body, radiating from a sunburst over his heart (where he was shot). The gold is molten and hot, making his body warm to the touch. While transforming, small flames may radiate from it as the gold coats his limbs and leaves obsidian in its path, only solidifying once his body his totally transformed. Transforming is painful, but it usually passes quickly, as it's a reaction to something.
FUNCTIONS:[ol type="decimal"][li]PRIMARY: DAMAGE/DURABILITY: Toby is as durable as wood, and can break through wood (while transformed) within one turn.[/li][li]SECONDARY: ENHANCED SENSES, VISUAL: While transformed, Toby sees the world in sepia, and it defies any sort of weather or natural elements. Sees clearly up to 16 feet (nearsighted when untransformed).[/li][li]TERTIARY: HEALING: In 3 turns, Toby's cuts and gashes are completely sealed with gold (and therefore healed).[/li][/ol]
LIMITATIONS: Firstly, Toby's power only activates in reaction to an external stimulus-- injury or threat thereof, a startle reflex, or anything else that will cause a person's adrenaline or cortisol to spike. It's not something that he can call-upon at-will. The transformation persists until Toby calms down. Since his transformation is rather incendiary, at first, it tends to burn through any clothes he may have been wearing before, which presents its own situational challenges. It's fine when you're a genderless effigy-- but once you're a pink, squishy human it's just immodest.
Since this power affects Toby's body, he'll never have Ranged attacks. It affects his flesh and blood, but beyond six- to- eight feet (2-3 meters) any gold or obsidian that is shed will simply become pebbles and droplets.
Toby is weak against cold- and water-based attacks. They can cool his body before it's fully transformed, leaving him prone. It also sends his powers on the fritz (possibly due to his phobia of open bodies of water).
